I chose this topic because of my positive experiences with veganism and the responses that I’ve seen from ‘omnivores’ in the past about this. I wanted to speak candidly about the fact that, while different, veganism is not impossible and, in fact, has great benefits. I wanted to keep the discussion going and encourage people who morally agree with me to pursue what I see as a logical response to those beliefs. I also intended to provide a guide for those who have an interest, so that they might make an informed decision and pursue veganism happily and healthily if it’s what they choose.

I didn’t really gear this towards people who disagree with my ethics at all; it works under the assumption that those reading already believe that hurting animals is wrong, that they have worth, etc. Basically, an accurate description of my intended audience might be the kind of people who would say that quote about being unable to give up chicken. I want to provide them encouragement to not feel like they have to eat a certain way for fear of loss or change.

I tried to use a casual but informed tone in the ‘essay’ part of my paper, paired with lists of organized information on veganism. I tried to include personal experiences, such as the fact that I was once in the same place as a lot of people who I intend to communicate to through this essay, in hopes of creating a relatable feeling and not seeming pushy or insensitive. But I also spoke in a more detached way when, for example, I detailed factory farming conditions, so that my answer wouldn’t seem like an appeal to emotions.
